Series history: Georgia leads the all-time series 54-19-2, including a 30-9 record in Athens. Since South Carolina joined the SEC in 1992, UGA has won 21 games over the Gamecocks and lost 10 — that includes a 10-5 record in Athens.

Injury report, top storylines for the game

  • South Carolina injury report: Coach Shane Beamer announced Thursday on the weekly Carolina Calls radio show that safety Nick Emmanwori and nickel David Spaulding will play against UGA, though they aren’t “100 percent.” Defensive end Jatius Geer, offensive lineman Markee Anderson and running back Bradley Dunn will be out. Beamer labeled everyone else dealing with injuries — wide receiver Ahmarean Brown, nickel Keenan Nelson Jr. and offensive lineman JonDarius Morgan — as questionable.

  • Starting fast: Multiple Gamecocks have stressed the importance of getting off to a quick start against Georgia. It’s important to start fast on the road in the SEC as to not let the environment drown out their confidence. Georgia also has started somewhat slow in each of its first two games. The Bulldogs had zero points in the first quarter against Ball State and scored one touchdown in the first against UT Martin.

  • Tuning out the noise: South Carolina running back Dakereon Joyner knows what it’s like to play and win in Athens. He helped lead the Gamecocks to their last victory over UGA in 2019 when he stepped in for an injured Ryan Hilinski at quarterback. Joyner’s advice for his teammates this weekend: “This is a mentality game, man. It’s football. We just can’t be caught up in the atmosphere. Can’t be caught up in the logo on their helmet. You gotta just be us, just go play ball.”

  • Can Spencer Rattler stay practically perfect?: USC quarterback Spencer Rattler has opened the 2023 season with accuracy and poise. Between the UNC and Furman games, he has completed 55 of 66 passes (83%) for 698 yards and three touchdowns — and no turnovers. South Carolina will continue to rely on him for SEC success.

  • The Gamecocks are UGA’s first real test: Over the offseason, ESPN picked South Carolina out as UGA’s first test of 2023. This is the first year since 2008 (Georgia Southern, Central Michigan) that Georgia has not faced a Power Five team in the first two weeks of the season. Between that and the Bulldogs’ new quarterback Carson Beck, the Gamecocks may have a better chance at winning than Las Vegas has given them credit for.

Weather forecast for Athens, Ga.

The National Weather Service expects Athens to be mostly sunny with a high near 81 degrees on Saturday.

Game prediction

ESPN’s Football Power Index gives Georgia a 91.8% chance to win the game.

Point spread

The Gamecocks are a 27.5-point underdog against the Georgia Bulldogs, according to VegasInsider’s consensus line. The over/under is 54.5 points.
